Sonja Rohn-Budreau’s Journey

My entire life I have had the opportunity to help and serve others. When I was a child, I grew up with a deaf brother and everywhere we went, I was always his ears! I never wanted him to be left out. Therefore, I always shared every life experience with him that I could. As we grew up, he became my best friend! Through his world, I learned about the deaf culture and all the different ways I could serve. This gave me a purpose to help others in need and it made me extremely humble.

When I was in high school, I had another opportunity to serve as a track captain for the girl’s high school track team. This was an honor and really allowed me to coach, teach, mentor, and encourage my fellow team members how to be the best at throwing shot put and discus. It was a rewarding experience and one of my single most life-changing experiences. In my junior year of high school, I broke the school record for the discus and shot put which I could not believe! It happened over and over until finally, I ended up with my best discus throw at the sectional track meet to qualify me for regional. I threw 105’9″! I was so overcome with emotion as I had practiced for hours every day at home after track practice with my mother cheering me on saying, “You can do it, Sonja.” My goal was to break 100 feet and I did!

Teachers, Coaches, and my mother taught me the importance of goals and what action steps you must take to reach them even if there are obstacles that block your way. Thanks to my high school teacher, Ms. Buchanan, at Tri-Central Jr.-Sr. high school for introducing me to Zig Ziglar’s program. Every morning in her class, we would start the class by saying, I am super good and I am going to get better! With that mentality, many of my life goals have been accomplished even when circumstances outside of my control threatened to prevent me from achieving my goals.

As I have journeyed through my life, I have been blessed with the opportunity to coach, inspire, and motivate others! One of my life-changing moments came at a time I had the opportunity to raise my children and coach them both in basketball in elementary school. Seeing my children and the other children I coached excel and actually learn was one of the most satisfying experiences I will always cherish.

Later in life, I had the opportunity to mentor many college students who I helped while I was an Assistant Director of Admissions. I became known as the “Lighthouse” mentor to my students as I showed them a path to their lighthouse in life! I was humbled by this and I was inspired by one of my colleagues to become a professional coach one day. My colleague, Dr. Samuel Edgeston, stood with me right at my desk, drawing my professional goal map as I was telling him what I wanted to accomplish one day. That was 9 years ago and I found this piece of paper recently that listed my goals to become an adjunct college instructor, professional certified coach, and business consultant. After reading this, I became very moved once again as I have achieved these goals within this last year (2018-2019).
